Around the streets of Portugal, the inside lids of garbage cans have been adorned with stickers bearing images of a tired looking, older homeless man. Accompanying the image is a tag line that reads, “Help. So that no one has to come here for food.”
A campaign from Vitae shelters
Would this campaign be effective in Australia?

I think it could for sure, progressive local councils may be a good start for this type of campaign. Areas like Northcote, Preston and Brunswick who are open to new ideas may be a good start to spread the word and to show results to the rest of the community.
ReplyDeleteI think you are right. Stickers on trash bin lids are not that expensive and if the campaign is succesful in those areas other councils may consider starting it as well. It is not only creating awareness but also reminding us of the basic needs homeless people have every time we throw our leftovers out.
ReplyDeleteCould the campaign also get people to think more about their own food consumption?I think many people are wasting a lot of food everyday which others could benefit from.
It is good idea to warn people do not waste food, according to the official statistic
ReplyDelete“Australians are throwing out three million tonnes of food every year – the equivalent of 145 kilograms for each and every one of us.”
I was working in Bakery, every day they throw away 15-20kg fresh bread; I wonder that why not giving those bread to homeless people, not only the bakery I’m working is doing this, also others doing this as well (due to food safety rules something). If we could collect those foods and give to homeless people, government and charities could save lot money on buying food for homeless people, but use those money to help homeless people other sides, eg buying cloth, build home etc.

You could use QR marks on the image itself to direct people to campaigns like one on Food Consumption - that way you give someone a place to find out more information and for the message to really be effective. Also, should that QR mark lead to a video or message that is really thought provoking and catchy, it could go viral very very quickly therefore really enhancing your marketing efforts.
